Security Officers must now engage in constant social interaction while differentiating, classifying, and categorizing threat levels presented with each real-time encounter. They must identify, deduce, and act in seconds to real-time information presented to them in constant waves of situational circumstance, they must also deter, intercept, and repeal danger when presented, and render life-saving measures to those in need of emergency medical attention then return to a state of physiological and psychological calm-readiness while continuing to conduct pleasant social interactions. A Security Officer is in a constant state of physiological and psychological fluctuation while tasked with the duty of presenting a total state of stability.

As business professionals, parents, and responsible members of society we must recognize that the role of the Security Officer has fundamentally evolve. We can no longer view Security Officers as stereotypical “security guards” walking around buildings twirling flashlights, or strolling desolate hallways chasing down shadows. We also take steps to understand and connect with our customers through rapport techniques thus minimizing the likelihood of our customers engaging in violent behavior while in the confines of our facilities. These strategies have proven to be relatively effective, but with the raise in social violence these strategies are failing more frequently. Our focus must then realign to fortifying the first degree strategies, and to securing ourselves against subsequent degrees of threats.

Subsequent threat degrees have become the most prevalent security issue facing organizations today. These threats are extremely difficult to identify, and impossible for an employer to consistently manage. The only option is to be prepared to eliminate these threats as they arise through the deployment of trained professionals. The social ties connected to our employees, vendors, and customers are responsible for such treats. For example, disgruntled or disillusioned husbands and wives; boyfriends and girlfriends; extended family members; and customers and their extended family members. Whether our employees and customers are facing divorce, dealing with infidelity, are unsatisfied with services rendered, or a lack of professional upward mobility these threats are real and intensifying. As business professionals we must come to terms with a social reality that is producing violent behavioral results. It is now irresponsible of us as responsible engines of society to ignore the dangers that threaten us, and to not proactively defend against such threats.
